The US Treasury Department reported that Rafa Márquez was among 22 people who had been penalized for drug trafficking.
The case involves a total of 43 Mexican subjects, including a football club and casino. Sanctions are the result of a multi-year investigation. Raul Flores Hernandez is the one behind the drug business.
He himself works in Guadalajara, working simultaneously with several drug cartels, including Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation. According to John E. Smith, director of the US Department of Foreign Resources Control, he worked to perfection in masking his illegal interests through close relationships and paying the decision-makers.
Interestingly, Marquez is not the only known character to have regular contact with Hernandez. In addition to him there is also mentioned Mexican singer Julián Álvarez.
So far, all assets of people allegedly linked to illicit trafficking have been frozen. Certainly in the nearest future we will have new information on this issue.
Recall that Márquez, in his extremely rich career, recorded 142 appearances in the Mexican national team jersey. Defender for many years played in Barcelona, with which he reached four Spanish championships and twice triumphed in the Champions League. In 2010 he left for New York Red Bulls, then played in Club León, Hellas Verona and Atlas of Guadalajara.
